Opinions

Unit 10 of 12 · B1. How to do it, ask and answer, listen first, speak, write, checkpoint: about 40 minutes.

B1 Where you will use it: A discussion with friends, a lesson, a team meeting.

By the end of this unit you can

How to do it

Four habits of a good conversation in this situation. Read them first; they come back in every part below.

Open with a softener

A soft opener invites a reply; a bare statement invites silence.

Agree and add

Agreement that adds something keeps the conversation moving.

Disagree in two steps

First understanding, then your view:

Ask why, both ways

Reasons turn opinions into a conversation.

Ask and answer

Questions you will hear or ask, with a natural answer. Read each pair aloud; the listen button says it with your device's Russian voice.

QuestionAnswer

What do you think of this film?

I think it's too long.

Do you agree? (to a man)

Not quite. I think it's interesting.

Why do you think so?

Because the actors are excellent.

And in your view, which is better?

On the one hand …, on the other …

You're right.

Thanks, but I may be wrong.

Maybe you're right, but …

Let's discuss it.

What's your view?

I believe it's a good idea.

Interesting!

Yes, I think so too.

I disagree with you.

Why?

It's a debatable question.

Agreed, there's no single answer.

Listen first

Hide the text, play the lines with the listen buttons and answer the questions. Then show the text and read the dialogue aloud.

Did you understand?

Speak

Shadow it: play one line, pause, say it back at the same speed; then take the other part. Role-play: say your three moves aloud, in Russian, before you read any model.

A friend says city life is better than the countryside.

  1. Agree with one point and add your own.
  2. Disagree softly with one point, with a reason.
  3. Ask what they think about a third point.

A team meeting: a colleague proposes a change you doubt.

  1. Say what you like about it.
  2. Say your doubt in two steps: I understand, but …
  3. Suggest a compromise.

Record and compare. Record yourself saying your part, listen back, and compare with the model lines above.

Nothing is uploaded: the recording stays on this device until you leave the page.

Write

Write a six-line discussion about whether books are better than films: an opinion, a reason, a soft disagreement, both sides, a compromise.

A model dialogue

Checkpoint

Be honest: Almost and Not yet send you back to the right part, and the unit counts as done only when you say so.

I can give an opinion and the reason for it.

I can agree, and disagree without offending.

I can ask what others think and react.
