Расска́з о себе́ Telling your story

Unit 11 of 12 · B1. How to do it, ask and answer, listen first, speak, write, checkpoint: about 40 minutes.

B1 Where you will use it: A job interview, a new group, the speaking part of an exam.

By the end of this unit you can

How to do it

Four habits of a good conversation in this situation. Read them first; they come back in every part below.

Follow the line

роди́лся — учи́лся — рабо́тал — сейча́с — пла́ны. Five stops, one sentence each, and the story holds.

Time words carry it

наза́д, че́рез, в … году́, когда́: Три го́да наза́д я на́чал учи́ть ру́сский.

Add detail with кото́рый

Я живу́ в го́роде, кото́рый о́чень люблю́. One clause makes a sentence sound like B1.

Hand the turn back

А вы? Вы быва́ли в …? A story that ends with a question becomes a conversation.

Ask and answer

Questions you will hear or ask, with a natural answer. Read each pair aloud; the listen button says it with your device's Russian voice.

Speak

Shadow it: play one line, pause, say it back at the same speed; then take the other part. Role-play: say your three moves aloud, in Russian, before you read any model.

The speaking part of an exam: tell your story for two minutes.

  1. Follow the five stops: born, studied, worked, now, plans.
  2. Use two time words and one кото́рый.
  3. End with a question back.

A new study group: everyone says a few words about themselves.

  1. Say where you are from and what you do.
  2. Say why you are learning Russian.
  3. Ask the next person something.

Record and compare. Record yourself saying your part, listen back, and compare with the model lines above.

Nothing is uploaded: the recording stays on this device until you leave the page.

Write

Write your story in six sentences: where you were born, what you studied, your work, when and why you started Russian, your plans, a question back.

A model dialogue

Я роди́лся в небольшо́м го́роде, а сейча́с живу́ в столи́це.

Я учи́лся в университе́те, на экономи́ста.

Сейча́с я рабо́таю в компа́нии, кото́рая де́лает програ́ммы.

Два го́да наза́д я на́чал учи́ть ру́сский, потому́ что люблю́ ру́сскую культу́ру.

В сле́дующем году́ я хочу́ сдать экза́мен и пое́хать в Москву́.

А вы? Вы быва́ли в Москве́?

Checkpoint

Be honest: Almost and Not yet send you back to the right part, and the unit counts as done only when you say so.

I can tell my story in order: past, present, plans.

I can answer questions about my studies, work and interests.

I can keep the listener with a question back.
