Unit 12 of 12 · B1. How to do it, ask and answer, listen first, speak, write, checkpoint: about 40 minutes.

B1 Where you will use it: A reception desk, a government office, a complaint.

By the end of this unit you can

How to do it

Four habits of a good conversation in this situation. Read them first; they come back in every part below.

The formal opener

Then your name, then the request.

Request with прошу́ or не могли́ бы вы

In writing: Прошу́ вас …

Ask about documents and times

Two questions save you a second visit.

Complain without heat

Calm words get faster help than loud ones.

Close formally

Пока́ belongs to friends.

Ask and answer

Questions you will hear or ask, with a natural answer. Read each pair aloud; the listen button says it with your device's Russian voice.

Did you understand?

Speak

Shadow it: play one line, pause, say it back at the same speed; then take the other part. Role-play: say your three moves aloud, in Russian, before you read any model.

At a reception desk you need a document.

  1. Open formally and say what you need.
  2. Ask which documents are needed and when it will be ready.
  3. Ask to repeat more slowly, then close formally.

Your online order hasn't arrived; you call the shop.

  1. State the problem calmly with К сожале́нию.
  2. Ask them to look into it.
  3. Accept the apology and agree what happens next.

Record and compare. Record yourself saying your part, listen back, and compare with the model lines above.

Nothing is uploaded: the recording stays on this device until you leave the page.

Write

Write a formal conversation of six lines: you complain calmly about a late order, the company apologises and proposes a solution.

A model dialogue

Checkpoint

Be honest: Almost and Not yet send you back to the right part, and the unit counts as done only when you say so.

I can open and close a formal conversation.

I can make a formal request and ask what documents are needed.

I can complain calmly and accept an apology.
