The 1-2-3 answer
The single most useful habit: answer, add one detail, ask back. It turns any question into a conversation.

When you don't understand
Asking is a skill, not a failure. Natives say these to each other all the time.
Повтори́те, пожа́луйста. | Please repeat. |
Говори́те ме́дленнее, пожа́луйста. | Please speak more slowly. |

Reacting
One word shows you are listening, and buys you a second to think.
